ChickFlick Friday: 27 Dresses
27 Dresses is one of the top RomCom movies on my list because I love love love the actors who played the main characters- Richard Marsden and Katherine Heigl. I wasn't disappointed when I was watching the film because oh boy do they have great chemistry together. What I loved about the film is that compared to the other chickflick movies that I have watched so far, this made me feel so giddy and scream silent screams in the middle of the night because there were so many heart-warming scenes all over the movie that just melts my heart.
The story wasn't so bad at all, I love the plot and how the character developments of each of the character has transpired all through out the movie. Katherine's character, Jane, was shown to be a person who is such a giver. A giver in a way wherein she struggles to say no to everyone, she shows up for everybody and lends them a helping hand like holding their gowns whilst they pee or holding their bouquettes while they deliver their wedding vows. She gives so much of her time and effort to other people and forgot to take care of herself. Furthermore, these people doesn't always return the same energy that she gives them, for example, her little sister Tess, who took advantage of her kindness and let her do all the work during her wedding preparation. To sum it all up, Jane's character is that kind person who accepts every favor even if she doesn't really want to.
Things changed for her when she met a wedding journalist, Kevin Doyle (Marsden) who taught her how it's okay to say no and that it's not a crime for her to choose herself for once. Throughout the movie, we can see him trying to get to know her and become a friend by being with her as she goes through the ups and downs of preparing the wedding of her sister. At first, the only reason why he is interested about her is so that he could write an article about her that could propel his career. However, as their relationship gets deeper, as he gets to know her in a deeper level, he wanted to craft a story about her that doesn't just show a girl who's always been the bridesmaid but never the bride. He was genuinely trying his best to come up with an article that could be both pleasing to his boss and Jane however his boss printed the article out without Jane even knowing that he was writing an article about her.
Because of that incident, Jane and Kevin's friendship faltered because of course, that felt like such a huge betrayal on Jane's part because she trusted him with her stories, with the stories behind the 27 dresses that she continued to keep inside a special closet. Long story short, they reconciled and kissed and made up.
My takeaways from the movie:
1. Happiness is a choice. The only one who could tell if you are happy with what you are doing is yourself. For other people, Jane might be deemed a martyr or a saint for always being there for her friends and families to the extent where some of them take advantage of it because they're so used to her not saying no to their favors. Some people, such as Kevin, might see this situation as something that is unfair for Jane. What people like Kevin do not see is that inside Jane's heart, she is not forced to do those things, to help out in any way she can, to help someone have the best day in their lives because a wedding is like a once and a lifetime event for a persons life, and that doing these things is what gives her life meaning.
2. Sometimes, our happiness blinds us. While it is good for Jane to find happiness in helping out. too much of that attitude blinded her repressed feelings. There were times that she thought that she was doing things out of the goodness of her heart numbing her out from the real feelings that she was supposed to feel. She thought that she was doing a good thing by letting people take advantage of her kindness because standing up for herself would only hurt the people she loved.
On a random Friday night, a movie as cozy and romantic as 27 Dresses is a loveable companion to ease the sense of loneliness one must endure in this life.
